Yar'Adua wants financial autonomy for judiciary
KATSINA State governor, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, has called for financial autonomy of the judicial arm of government as a key ingredient for its independence.
Yar'Adua, who made the appeal yesterday at the foundation-laying ceremony of the state High Courts Complex, said that the "judiciary is one of the central institutions for the building and sustenance of democracy."
He added: "The judiciary as the third arm of government ensures civilisation and development, promotes the rule of law and enforces the fundamental rights of the citizens".
According to the governor, due to its noble role of ensuring that chaos does not prevail in the society, it becomes necessary to grant the judiciary financial autonomy.
He expressed the preparedness of his administration to ensure that financial autonomy is granted the judicial and legislative arms of government in the state before 2007, in order to lay a solid foundation for democratic sustenance.
