Robbers kill policeman, hurt accountant in Makurdi
From Simeon Nwakaudu, Makurdi
THEY arrived the bank premises in two automobiles; a Peugeot 406 and Honda Accord, both saloons. It was about 1.45 p.m. yesterday. Of course they had a mission: To rob the bank.
The robbers numbering about 10 on arrival at the commercial bank in the Old G.R.A. quarters of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, immediately made for the securityman on duty, disarmed him and shot him dead. He was a police inspector.
Acting out their script, The Guardian learnt that the robbers went for the accountant and shot him too. Luckily he did not die - at least as at the time of filing this report.
Witnesses told The Guardian that the robbers, after dislodging the bank's security, quickly identified its manager, seized him and forced him to open the vaults for them.
The robbery, which lasted 30 minutes, paralysed activities in the Old G.R.A. district of Markurdi, the area housing Government House, Mobile Police Squadron, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Commissioner of Police Lodge, Government ministries and offices of international agencies.
Hundreds of spectators, including this reporter, watched helplessly as the robbers cordoned off the roundabout in front of the state's Works Ministry.
Security operatives in Government offices close to the bank fled for safety as the robbers shot sporadically into the air.
The police later arrived at the scene 20 minutes after the robbers had concluded their operation. They arrived in a pickup van with registration number PF 2138 BN.
Angry bystanders and onlookers booed the police for their late arrival. They merely took away the corpse of their colleague and the injured bank accountant.
When contacted, the Benue State Police Command spokesman, Mr. Adesanya Jinadu, confirmed the incident but said his office was yet to be furnished with details.
It would be recalled that a commercial bank was also robbed in broad daylight in the same town in June.
