NEPA, what have we done?
SIR: It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter hoping that you will help bring to public attention the plight of a section of Sangotedo Town on the Lagos-Epe Expressway.
We have been without light since May 2004. The transformer serving a section of the town "blew up" and since then we have lived virtually in darkness. Those who could afford generators initially were forced to abandon this "luxury" in the face of crippling economic hardship. All efforts to reconnect the town have proved abortive and NEPA officials have offered various excuses over the months.
Life has practically come to a standstill for us and our children who have been deprived of the opportunity to live a normal life. You can imagine life without television, radio or cold water, such ordinary stuff. The prospect of spending Christmas in that condition is scary. Seven solid months without electricity is no life. Even those in the remotest part of the country live better than this.
Whoever is in charge of this situation should do something and quickly too. A sensible human being should know that though we are not protesting physically but deep within us we may just be cursing whoever is responsible for our predicament.
Did someone say I should be appealing to NEPA to restore electricity? You cannot imagine how I feel. Close your eyes and think about it for a second. What a country!
Tunde Adebayo,
Lagos.
