Missing Vessel:CNS Aware Vessel Remained Under Navy Custody - Agbiti
By Abimbola Akosile and Oghenekevwe Laba, 12.15.2004
Rear-Admiral Francis Agbiti, 2nd accused officer in an on-going trial of three top Admirals in the Nigerian Navy, yesterday told a military court that Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice-Admiral Samuel Afolayan, was fully aware of the fact that the missing oil bunkering vessel, MT African Pride, was still under Navy custody as recently as this year. The allegation, made by Agbiti, while testifying in his own defense at trial courtroom in Officers Mess, 81st Division, Nigerian Army, Ikoyi, Lagos, ran counter to Afolayans January 29 directive that all arrested vessels be handed over to Nigeria Police, Ministry of Transport, and NNPC, for prosecution of crew and evacuation of vessels contents. The officers on trial for alleged involvement in the disappearance of MT African Pride, are Rear Admiral Anthonio Bob-Manuel, Dep. Commandant Armed Forces Command & Staff College, Jaji, Rear Admiral Francis Agbiti, Chief of Training & Operations, Nigerian Navy, and Rear Admiral Samuel Kolawole, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command. Speaking on issue of CNSs awareness of vessel still remaining in naval custody despite his directive, Agbiti insisted that the FOCs had briefed Afolayan and all officers present at a Principal Staff Officers meeting held in April in Abuja, on all arrested vessels and areas of responsibility. Agbiti, raising the allegation to counter the particulars of Count 5 in his charge sheet (wherein he was accused of giving CNS the impression that the vessel had been released to Police when it wasnt true), said, constantly, the CNS is briefed. Signals from commands where the vessels are arrested are sent to Naval Headquarters and circulated. CNS is briefed, CO Beecroft has testified how he briefed CNS when he comes to Lagos.
