PDP Can't Amend 1999 Constitution - Buhari
From Jare Ilelaboye in Katsina, 12.15.2004
KATSINA
Flagbearer of the All Nigeria peoples Party (ANPP) in the 2003 presidential election Major-General Muhammadu Buhari has said the Federal Government and PDP-led administration has no power whatsoever to amend or review any of the aspects of 1999 Constitution except the Federal Government files a bill before the National Assembly before doing so. The former Head of State who was responding to questions from journalists in Katsina when he performed the commissioning of ANPP member in the National Assembly Alhaji Hamisu Gambo constituency office said the claim of PDP of setting up a committee of eight to review certain part of the political problems in the country was illegal on the part of Obasanjo Government. he said if any reform or review on the present constitution was to take place, it must come through a bill but not through arbitrary form of setting up a committee as being done in the present circumstance. General Buhari said whatever wrong with the present constitution either on two third or three third of the country, the PDP government cannot touch or have the right to amend any part of it. He said nobody can impose anything on this country without the consent of the majority of Nigerians adding the Makarfi Committee is illegal as far as he is concerned. He said the since the PDP came to power five years ago, there have been lapses such as corruption and insecurity in the country whereby those trying to come to the country to invest could not do so adding that the economic policies of the present government was clumsy because the government is confused. He pointed out that Nigerians have been reaping from widespread of rigging of elections by the PDP at the polls. On his election petition before the election tribunal, General Buhari expressed shock that after one year of the general election, tribunals are still to hear complaints that arose from the election and blamed the Federal government on this. He said where the judgment of his complaints did not vindicate him, he would go to Supreme Court to the election petition again. General Buhari was of the belief that though Obasanjo and Atiku may not like to leave their posts because they have supplanted themselves in power. He urged Nigerians to rise up to the truth if things would change for better in the country.
