Sheriff Indicts Management of Water Treatment Plant

The Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has given one week ultimatum to the management of the Maiduguri Water Treatment Plant, to rectify the problem that causes shortage of water in Maiduguri or be sacked. However, the governor sees on his visit to the treatment plant Tuesday, for a fact finding mission on where the problem lies, sees it as a sabotage to his government base on the security reports, he claimed, be received. Sheriff said, he would not hesitate to sack anybody found sabotaging his government. "I will not hesitate to sacrifice anybody, because I have a security report which I show to your commissioner that you are sabotaging our efforts deliberately." "I will dismiss anyone of you. We can't explain water is not flowing. You are telling me clarifier, how will I know clarifier will not work. Why can't you make arrangement before it broke down." He continued "Let me be honest to you, I am going to give you a maximum of one week for this thing to be repaired otherwise I am going to sack all of you.
When I said I am going to sack, I am going to dismiss you; since I got security reports showing that it is a sabotage, I am not going to take it." The Commissioner for Rural and Urban Water Supply Alhaji Abu Kyari, who conducted the governor round the plant, said that the reactivation of clarifying pipes and some emergency repairs especially at the filter level is on the process. He admitted that the esqua blower, that blows air to clean the filter is bit weak and there is leakage in some of the values that have been there for ten to eleven years. Aba Kyari maintained that they will continue to work to the best of their abilities to ensure a good shape of the plant, already he said, they invited the agent of the company that installed the plant to sort out ways in cushioning the problems. He added that the engineer, suggested to introduce a new value which will have enough pressure to clean the filter, stressing that they are waiting for the proposal of the engineer before the end of this week. He also said that they are working on the clarifier which contributes to a major problem of the plant. "We have been carrying out maintenance periodically to rectify the problem that we have for the clarifier. And where we are talking of total rehabilitation of the clarifying pipes, it means total shutting down of the plant." Undoubtedly, the government of Senator Ali Sheriff makes water one of its cardinal objectives, People of the state expressed happiness at the time water flows within his first year. THISDAY check revealed that the treatment plant which was installed for ten to eleven years back, has not been rehabilitated. The treatment plant, suppose to have maintenance for at least five years interval to ensure that the plant works in good shape.
