Is President Olusegun Obasanjo's proposed National Dialogue the way forward for Nigeria?
No Alternative to Democracy-Ibori
From Jaiyeola Andrews in Asaba, 12.15.2004
It has been observed that Nigerians have no choice, but to continue to sustain democracy and the only way of doing that is to find solutions to the country's problems. Governor James Ibori of Delta State made the observation yesterday in Asaba, when the forum of commissioners for Agriculture of the 9 Niger Delta States paid a courtesy call on him. According to him, "we have all tasted both military and civilian administrations, and i think Nigerians have come to agree that democracy as civilian administration is the best thing to have in any country". Ibori stress that all Nigerians must strive to contribute their quotas wherever they find themselves, with a view of present sliding back to the old days of anarchy and chaos. He noted that lasting solution must be preferred to lack of production in the agricultural sector, adding that agriculture must be made viable and profitable for private investors, as well as making it attractive to public officers. "We must encourage, also the federal Government to have very consistent policies in this sector, because that is a major problem" the Governor averred. According to Ibori, a situation whereby 5 to 6 commissioners or ministers for Agriculture are appointed in a four-year tenure does not augur well for consistent policies in the sector. The Chairman of the forum, who is also the commissioners for Agriculture of Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Trenchard Ibia earlier said their sole aim was the development of agriculture in the entire Niger Delta region. He promised that they would work hard to see that the economy of the region was diversified from over-reliance on oil to agriculture.
