Plateau PDP Faction Suspends Dariye, Lar, Kwande
From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos, 12.15.2004
A crack has emerged in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State as a break away faction led by the former Chairman Alhaji Habu Shindai, has announced the suspension of prominent members of the party in the state. However, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Venatus Ikem, has denounced the Shindai group saying the national secretariat recognizes Mr. Maichibi Vwarji as the state chair5man of the part. Prominent among those allegedly suspended by the break away faction are Governor Joshua Dariye, Chief Solomon Lar, Ambassador Yahaya and Vwarji. Adressing a press conference at the Alliance for Democracy (AD) Secretariat in Jos yesterday, Shindai who was flanked by Ambassador Fidelis Tapgun and Senator George Hoomkwap disclosed that he was "unconstitutionally and illegal removed from office as the state chairman." "I was severally assaulted and scornfully removed from the seat reserved for state chairman at public functions and mocked at on the prompting of state governor Chief Joshua Dariye and Mr. Maichibi Vwarji." Shindai who did not deny the involvement of Deputy Senate President, Alhaji Ibrahim Nasir Mantu in setting up the parallel PDP lamented his removal from office under the guise of being nominated for Commissionership adding that because the suspended governor was restored back to office through due process, his own case should not be different. He said an investigative panel has been set up even as he said the governor and six others are expected to face a disciplinary committee next Saturday or face penalties as stipulated in the party constitution. However in a telephone interview, the National Publicity Secreatry said "Habu Shindai is not our state chairman. We are aware that sometime ago, he stepped aside to become a commissioner. We do not know this group. As for (Damishi) Sango, Jang (Commodore Jonah) and others, they are just coming to the party having left sometime ago. I do not want to join issues with anybody." Speaking in the same vein, the State Chairman, Maichibi Vwarji said "I am aware of these people. These are people who were in AD, who thought there was going to be an election after the state of emergency. So they came into PDP. And when the mergency was lifted, they now feel like going back to their (former) office.
