Task Force Set up on Pension

ATask Force has been set up by the Lagos State Government to examine files and records on outstanding pension and effect its appropriate harmonisation, to ensure no pensioner is shortchanged. Head of Lagos state public Service, Mr Akinsanya Sunny- Ajose, made this disclosure during this year's Pensioners Day Celebration. Ajose said the State Government was highly concerned about the plight of pensioners and has resolved to do all it could to give them what rightly belongs to them. He said this was why spirited efforts were made in the past to find a lasting solution to the PAY-AS-YOU-GO Pension Scheme, even before the emergence of the present pension reforms. Such effort, he said, includes establishment of the pension sinking funds, which is aimed at ensuring security of gratuity and pension payment under the PAY-AS-YOU-GO pension scheme. He also said a Help Desk was introduced to assist pensioners in filling correct information in their pension forms to prevent hitches. On the present pension reforms, said government has directed appropriate agencies and committees to work on necessary structures for pension reforms in the state public service. He said government is working on operating its pension scheme within a computerised environment, to give employer and pensioners easy access to information and data, thereby speeding up the process of administering pension. Ajose said this will not only ensure prompt payment, but also improve payment security and accuracy, thus guide against fraudulent claims. Earlier in his address, Chairman of Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Lagos State Council, Comrade Tunde Olusanya, decried a situation where pensioners are treated as second-class citizens. He, however, thanked the Lagos State Government for recently effecting five months pension payment out of its arrears. Olusanya advocated for both Health Care and Social Welfare Service for the senior citizens, saying those in authority should remember they will also retire some day. He requested for pay slip for pensioners, such as is been given to people presently in employment, so as to have a record of what they are receiving, adding that delay in payment of pension has made pensioners especially those from Federal Agencies confused on what monthly payment is being effected.
