From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki, 12.15.2004
Ebonyi
Ebonyi State Government has signed Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with a Germany-based international Investment and Trade Company, Globe Commodities, to establish palm oil processing plant and expand the states palm oil plantation to 30,000 hectares. This was made known to reporters by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Ozo, Nweke Ozo who said the agreement was signed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. According to Ozo, who led a three-man delegation to Malaysia to attend an international conference on investment, details of the MOU include the condition that State shall define and make available all information on land available for the project, and guarantee the proposed method of developing the project through private initiative. In a joint news briefing with members of the delegation, and the Commissioner of Information, Dr John Otu, the SSG said according to the agreement, Globe Commodities shall prepare a general concept to integrate the existing state government owned nursery palms to establish a robust palm oil sector. Ozo said he was optimistic that the government would galvanise the oil palm industry with the assistance of the agency, assuring that it would secure at least 10,000 hectares of land from each of the three senatorial zones of the state, noting that the state government had prepared for the actualization of the project, as it already has oil palm nurseries in various parts of the state. Commissioner of Information, Dr John Otu, also expressed governments readiness to embark on the project adding that Ebonyi is largely an agrarian state with so much potential for agricultural development. He said government is determined to improve its revenue through investment in the sector, which explains why it established fertilizer blending plant and one of the largest poultry farms in Nigeria, the Nkaliki Poultry Complex.
