Joint account in Katsina richer by N7.2bn--Perm Sec

KATSINA state Local Government Joint Account is now worth about N7.2 billion, permanent secretary in the state ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs, Alhaji Abu Dan Malam Karofi has revealed.

Alhaji Karofi told Daily Triumph in an exclusive interview on Wednesday that the amount was realised through prudent management of fund allocated to local government councils in the state.

He explained that the join account has yielded positive result as funds meant for developmental activities are properly utilized.

Alhaji Karofi further explained that before the introduction of the joint account, funds allocated to the councils were mismanaged and embezzled by officials of the councils.

The joint account introduced by the administration of Governor Umaru Musa Yaradua and later followed by other state governments, had assisted towards proper management of public fund, he added.

The permanent secretary recalled that when he took over the affairs of the ministry, local governments were in financial mess as they cannot even pay salaries of their workers.

He disclosed that it took the government up to six months to sanitise the activities of the local governments for which the state government spent about N2.3 billion to settle backlog of salaries, pension arrears and liabilities of contractors.

Karofi explained that among the measures introduced to sanitise the councils was the scrutinising of all contracts awarded by the councils and monitoring of projects executed.

He explained that the state government has no intention to withhold local governments funds, but government is ready to release all funds meant for the councils if at all they can manage them properly.
