FG urged to complete Gari dam irrigation project

By MUHD, HAMISU ABDULLAHI

THE federal government of Nigeria has been called upon to complete Gari Dam project already started by the scrapped Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF).

The call was made by a renowned politician and a traditional title-holder in Kunchi local government area of Kano state, Alhaji Musa Kunchi.

Alhaji Kunchi who spoke to Daily Triumph in Kano noted that the Gari Dam itself was constructed by President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1976 and 1977 when he was the military head of state of the country.

Since then, he said, the proposed irrigation project in the area was abandoned, which he said if completed would contribute immensely to the economic viability of the area, Kano, Jigawa states and Nigeria as a whole.

Alhaji Kunchi said based on the significance of the project, there is need for President Obasanjo to direct its completion with immediate effect.

According to him, the dam, if it receives the light of the day from the government, would be beneficial to the people of Kunchi, Makoda, Dambatta and Kazaure and Roni local government areas of Kano and Jigawa states respectively.

"Because of this, we feel we must put more pressure for the actualization of the project,'' he stated.

He further reiterated that if completed, the project would give a boost to various businesses and product processing dependant on agricultural produce as raw materials.

Such farm produce being produced in commercial quantities in the affected area include rice of various types, wheat, tomato, sweet pepper, pepper and onions among other numerous cash crops.
