Obasanjo chides delay in court proceedings

From KABIRU YUSUF, Abuja

PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday faulted court judges over what he described as interminable delays in concluding court cases saying that it is one of the major problems in the country's judicial system.

Chief Obasanjo who stated this while receiving presidential action committee on the control of violent crimes and illegal weapons at the State House, charged judges to always put machineries in motion to check all those lapses.

He, however, advocated that sanctions should be close to the offence, just as reward should also be close to the good deed in order to encourage good citizenship and discourage crimes.

The president assured members of the committee that adequate resources would be provided to enable them continue the good work they had started, and commended the committee for working with the judiciary and other arms of government involved in checking corruption and crime into society.

Speaking earlier, the chairman of the committee, Justice Emmanuel Olayinka Ayoola had told the president that since their inauguration in April 2004, the committee has received over 200 memoranda from public, interacted with security and law enforcement agencies as well as the universities communities.

Justice Emmanuel who reaffirmed their committees commitment to the control of violent crimes, further said they were already considering the memos and planned to hold sittings in the six geo-political zones of the country.

The chairman then commended President Obasanjo for selecting them among millions of Nigerians to contribute toward a crime-free Nigeria assuring him that their committee is ever ready to conduct its assignment diligently.
