Maiadua, Jibia border markets yet to take-off - Survey

From Muawuya B. Idris, Katsina

Barely six years after the commissioning of Maiadua and Jibia border markets in Katsina state business activities at the two markets are yet to fully take-off.

Our correspondent learnt it that the markets which were initiated by the then military administrator in the state, Col. Samaila Chamah and completed by Lt. Col. Joseph Akaagerger are not being utilized.

Daily Triumph recalled that Jibia border market was commissioned by the then Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar while Maiadua market was commissioned by his wife, Justice Fatima Abubakar in 1999.

However, since the commissioning ceremony, no business activities between Nigerian businessmen and their counterparts in Niger Republic have commenced.

Katsina state commissioner of commerce, industry and tourism Alhaji Yusuf Bello Maiadua confirmed that business activities are yet to fully take off at the border markets since their commissioning.

Alhaji Bello lamented that because of the situation of the two border markets, government is not getting a kobo as revenue.

He attributed the non take-off of business activities to some technicalities to bring together customs, immigration, police and businessmen from both Nigeria and Niger Republic.

Alhaji Bello explained however, that plan has reached advanced stage for the take-off of the border markets.

The commissioner said the border markets would be provided with banking and immigration facilities as well as customs services to facilitate exchange of currencies and movements of persons and goods.
