WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2004           Monarch wants peace between A/Ibom, Cross River The paramount ruler of Itu in Akwa Ibom, Edidem Ekpeobong Atakpa, has stressed the need for peace between the people of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. Atakpa took this stand at Itu, in a speech to mark the golden jubilee celebration of his enthronement. According to him, �the human and material losses so far recorded in conflicts between communities from the two states are too high. Sadly enough, some people have allowed ethnic and other primordial sentiments to disunite them, as against the dream of their fathers which stressed integrity, respect and love for one another.�� Atakpa tasked the governments of the two states �to forge a peaceful solution to the lingering crisis, and stop the wanton destruction and deaths which have always characterised those conflicts��. Turning to other matters, he asked President Olusegun Obasanjo �to present a bill on a social security scheme for Nigerians over 60 years old, to the National Assembly, as an alternative to inadequate pension facilities��. Noting what he called �the treatment being meted out to pensioners in spite of their contributions to the country��, he stressed �the need for our leaders to do something urgent to address the situation��.
