WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2004           Turaki denies defection reports Governor Saminu Turaki of Jigawa has dismissed as �malicious� recent reports alleging his defection to the rival PDP. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quotes the governor as declaring that he was still a staunch member of the ANPP. Speaking at an interactive session with journalists on Monday in Dutse, Turaki refuted the allegation as �false and misleading.�� He accused some members of the National Assembly for spearheading the claims to tarnish his image and that of his government. �I�m still an ANPP governor, I contributed to the growth of the party, which no one has ever done,�� he declared. The governor, attributed the allegation to what he called �detractors�, whom he said, were bent on derailing government�s policies to improve the lives of the people. �Those opposed to us were not happy over our achievements in the past years and therefore, have resorted to blind criticism. �We deliberately refused to join issues with them, because we knew where we are going and therefore, need not dissipate our energy or lose focus,�� he said. The governor, however, blamed the media for misrepresenting the state and allowing itself to be hoodwinked by those he referred to as �Jigawa indigenes living outside the state��. �Those criticising us just sit in their office and fabricate stories to tarnish our image,�� he said.
