It
is amazing that some weeks to the commencement of 2005 football season, it
is not clear if teams like Kano Pillars , Bank of the North (BONstaff) and
Buffalo Football Club wholl feature in the premier and pro-league
respectively will play their home matches in their familiar turfs. This is
not unconnected with the poor and dilapidated condition of the Pillars
Stadium and the slow pace of work at the Sani Abacha Stadium arena fencing.
last Wednesdays edition of Daily Triumph
reported that the poor state of Pillars and Sani Abacha stadia may force the
states flag-bearers in the 2005 league shift bases to the neighbouring
states. It reported that while Sani Abacha stadium is undergoing a
multi-million Naira arena fencing project works awarded by the Kano state
government, Pillars stadium is in a bad shape, as it was vandalised some
weeks ago by irate showbiz fans.
The stadium was scattered during Sallah
celebration shows by fans when they realised that the promoters who promised
to bring certain actors and musicians to the stadium as advertised had
failled to do so and it was getting darker and no provision of flood lights.
Infact, the stadium suffered severe damages as its doors, fences and lots
more have been seriously damaged some even beyond repairs.
From the papers report, one is certain that
our teams must have to start thinking of a new base to host their home
matches in the 2005 league season. Because if they dont in good time, NFA
will choose one for them and I dont think that will augur well for them.
At this juncture, I want to appeal to the
authority in-charge of the Pillars Stadium to always cross check and
thoroughly examine the programme of the prospective users of the stadia
before given the go ahead to use stadium. This is not the first time the
stadium is being damaged and should be the last. The primary function of a
stadium like Pillars is to host games like football, athletics, training etc
and not concerts.
These people should be asked either sign a bond
to pay for any damage incurred or asked to use Race Course to avoid the
present disappointment we are now in.
