Lagos govt submits list of new LGs to N/Assembly for approval

By Kenneth Ehigiator and Vibian Obiatuegwu
Wednesday, December 15, 2004

GOVERNOR Bola Tinubu of Lagos State yesterday said the state government has submitted list of its new local governments to the National Assembly for approval in accordance with the recent Supreme Court ruling, expressing confidence in the federal government’s readiness to release council’s allocations.

The governor, who spoke in an interview with newsmen at the presidential wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, argued that there could be no consequential amendment to any constitutional schedule without creation of local governments.

He described as unfortunate misinterpretations of the Supreme Court judgement, saying the court answered virtually all the prayers of the state.

"What did I go to court for? Release the money, obey my law, uphold the elections. Finish. I don’t need anything more than that.

"I have submitted it (list of local governments) to the National Assembly. My child has been born, the name is Jacob, if I get to your office and you say your register is closed, I’m not taking that baby back home and slaughter it.

"The Supreme Court says they should continue and the federal government is under obligation not to tamper or alter or do anything to that baby; you can’t murder it, you can’t kill it. If the baby is 24, by the time you open the register, he’s still going to live," Tinubu said.

He said the Supreme Court had so clearly, in its ruling, defined the separation of powers between the National Assembly and the judiciary, stressing it was the responsibility of the National Assembly to make law and that of the Supreme Court to interpret the laws.

He said he had confidence in the readiness of President Olusegun Obasanjo to release to the state allocations meant for the local governments.
