National honours: Obasanjo decorates Shonekan, 193 others

ABUJA, the
nation’s seat of power comes alive today as President Olusegun Obasanjo,
decorates 194 distinguished Nigerians and foreigners with national honours,
awards, medals and insignia.
Top on the list of the event billed for
the Aso Rock Villa, is former Head of Interim Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan,
who will be decorated with the medal of Grand Commander of the Order of the
Federal Republic (GCFR), Nigeria’s highest national honour.
Other recipients, who will be decorated
are two notable royal fathers, Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe and
Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar.
Both will be decorated with medals of the
Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic.
Other notable names on the honours list
include Managing Director of Zinox Computer, Chief Leo Stan Ekeh; world renowned
Information Technology (IT) expert, Dr. Philip Emeagwali; Amb. Segun Olusola and
Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA),
Prof. Joy Ogwu.
A breakdown of the recipients in the
different categories show that only Chief Shonekan bagged the GCFR award, six
persons for the CFR, 20 for Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), 47 for
the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), 54 for the Order of the Niger (OON), 41
for the Member of the Federal Republic (MFR), 13 for the Member of the Order of
the Niger (MON) and 12 for Federal Medals respectively.
The investiture ceremony which will
attract guests from all walks of life including politicians, top business
executives, members of the diplomatic corps and awardees families and friends
will also witness lots of cultural contents according to sources close to the
awards committee.
Two top Nigerian musicians, Paul Play
Dairo and Sunny Nneji, will lead a horde of others including the National Troupe
and different cultural groups drawn from across the country to entertain the
audience.
