Amaechi, ex-minister, carpets Obasanjo on Ngige

By Okey Maduforo,

Correspondent, Awka

First Republic Minister of Aviation, Mbazuike Amaechi, has described the allegation by President Olusegun Obasanjo that Governor Chris Ngige of Anambra State admitted not winning the gubernatorial election as playing the ostrich.

Amaechi contended that Obasanjo must be very economical with the truth if he does not know that almost in all the elected positions in Nigeria, there were a dozen of lawmakers and governors who did not win the last elections and many others who were not even qualified according to the electoral laws to contest the elections.

He further described the face-off between the national party chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Audu Ogbeh and President Obasanjo as unfortunate and in bad taste, but was quick to say that Ogbeh’s letter to Obasanjo “may be God’s wondrous way of getting the President to speak up in a matter of great gravity in which his long silence has been deafening”.

Amaechi also noted that it is morally and unconstitutionally wrong for the presidency to shield the culprits of the November mayhem from prosecution, alleging that Obasanjo gave Chris Uba the impetus to ignore all efforts at making peace in Anambra State.

The ex-Minister also accused Uba of not honouring the peace meetings brokered by  Anambra elders towards settling the logjam in the state, adding that due to the backing of the Presidency, Uba does not see the elders as a force to be respected.

Amaechi lamented that all efforts by him to speak with President Obasanjo since July 10, 2003 proved abortive as security aides made it impossible, adding that he had written Obasanjo on the matter but he had not granted him audience.
