Ngige’s security aide, three others arrested

By Okey Maduforo

Correspondent, Awka

The police have arrested four members of the Anambra State vigilance group over illegal possession of firearms.

Among them is the Special Assistant to Governor Chris Ngige on Security Matters, Mr. Okey Ojibe, who is also the Deputy Director, Operations of the group.

The Police Commissioner, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu, said his men who were on a stop-and-search operation at Odumodu junction close to Nteje junction in Oyi Local Government accosted the vigilance group members who refused to be searched, thus the policemen forced them to comply.

Found on the men were two pump action long guns, 14 live cartridges, charms, jack knives, three identity cards and two GSM phones belonging to Ojibe.

Also recovered were the sum of N431,500 and a spare Enugu State number plate AS 850 VWN that was different from the number plate AN 11301 on their Mercedes Benz car.

Ogbaudu said the police were not against vigilance groups in the state but that people who do not reside at any given community could not be deployed to the area for security operation, adding that though the group had the legislative backing of the assembly, its operation should be clearly stated.

He said the law did not allow them to carry arms because the police have to make approvals for the possession of firearms before civilians could use them.

“People have a lot of misconceptions about vigilance groups and the use of firearms but I would have to give the approval before the arms could be used,” he said.

The government is yet to react to the development as those contacted decline to comment on the issue.
