N470m lost to Onitsha market fire

By Okey Maduforo

Correspondent, Awka

Goods worth more than N470 million were lost in two separate fire incidents that razed the building materials market at River Niger bridge head and Ochanja textile market on Wednesday.

A police report in Anambra State said the cause of the two fire incidents had not been identified while fire fighting men and law enforcement agents have been stationed at the markets to pick bits of information that could lead to getting to the cause of the fires.

Speaking with journalists in Awka, the Police Commissioner, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu, said the harmattan season is dry and a fire could easily spread, adding that the fire cannot be linked to the activities of the hoodlums of November 10.

The Commissioner for Special Duties, Chris Atuegwu, who was contacted by the lawmaker representing Onitsha South constituency, Mrs. Tabansi Okoye, said when Governor Chris Ngige heard of the incident, he sought assistance from Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, who dispatched fire servicemen that put off the fire.

Atuegwu said government is to embark on a fact-finding mission so as to assess the extent of damage and also identify the cause of the inferno.

The chairman of Anambra State Market Traders Association (ASMATA), Chief Sylvester Odife, said two lines were affected at the Ochanga textile market where N70 million was lost in the burnt 40 stalls.

Odife said the building materials market at bridgehead Onitsha was a monumental loss where about N400 million were lost including 200 machines and power generating sets.

The police have advised members of the public to be mindful of the use of highly inflammable solutions and exercise caution in bush burning.
