Ohaneze rejects national dialogue committee

Bureau
Chief, Enugu
Ohaneze Ndigbo has rejected the committee recently set up by the Federal
Government to hold a national dialogue, saying it did not represent what
Nigerians have been clamouring for.
The Secretary-General, Chief Joe Achuzia told journalists in
Enugu that the committee having been handpicked by government would expectedly
not be representative of the various ethnic groups in the country that have
positions to present at a properly constituted national conference.
He said a truly representative conference would have been
attended by delegates duly and properly elected by their groups to present
their views, adding that the committee would not enjoy the confidence of the
people. Achuzie said the government committee was unlikely to meet the
expectations of the people and should therefore be disbanded in favour of a more
representative body that would reflect the will of Nigerians.
He added that Ohaneze would not participate in any dialogue called by the
government committee and urged other ethnic groups to do likewise so as not to
be hoodwinked into accepting decisions that would not resolve the nation's
numerous problems.
The Ohaneze scribe said any constitutional review must start with the
1960 constitution that has not been repealed but was only suspended by the
military in 1966.
On the face-off between President Obasanjo and the Chairman
of the People’s Democratic Party, Chief Audu Ogbeh, over the Anambra
crisis, Achuzie said since it has come to light that the PDP did not win the
gubernatorial elections as admitted in the commnts of both Obasanjo and Ogbeh, the
party should toe the path of honour and bow out of the state.
He said it was the only way peace and stability could return
to the beleaguered state that had in the past one month been subjected to
wanton attacks by political hirelings who have burnt or destroyed almost all
the noted public buildings in the state.
