YCE chieftain applauds court’s ruling on Lagos council fund

By Dele Moses,

Special Correspondent, Ilorin

Chairman of the Kwara State chapter of the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), Alhaji Abdulkarim Olola Kasum, has hailed the Supreme Court judgment on statutory allocations meant for Lagos State Local Governments being withheld by the federal government.

The apex court had last week ruled that the federal government had no right to withhold the allocations while also holding that the allocations are meant for the 20 councils recognised by the constitution.

The court also held that the additional 37 councils created by the administration of Governor Bola Tinubu can enjoy legitimacy only after the National Assembly has listed them in the constitution.

Kasum, in a statement, praised the judiciary for its courage in the pursuit of its historic role “as the last bastion of justice, the rule of law and human dignity."

He congratulated the Lagos State Government, particularly Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the outcome of the Court proceedings which “represented a victory over the forces of retrogressive oppression"

He said: "I also commend him (Tinubu) for his uncompromising stance over the political liberty of lagosians, his doggedness, courage and endurance which has earned him victory over the president," Kasum said.

Kasum recalled that he had predicted the victory of the Lagos State Government in the fiscal suit and the triumph of Tinubu over those he described as his "blackmailers".

He stated: “In my reply to castigations on Governor Ahmed Tinubu by the duo of Olu Falae and Bode George published on page 3 of the Sunday Independent Newspaper of November 14, 2004, I had commented thus: "These orchestrated acts of Political mudslinging vilification and baseless blackmail cannot by inch altar the bright Political prospects of the charismatic Lagos Governor whose unbeatable records of achievements is written in gold in the minds of Lagosian", Ahmed Tinubu is likely to emerge the labour Governor the country who risked his life and position to ensure the triumph of the masses over the callous policies of the Federal Government."
