Oyo LG chairmen
boycott meeting with Assembly
By Sola Shittu
Reporter, Ibadan
Chairmen of local
governments in Oyo state are now on collision path with the state House of
Assembly following the refusal of the council bosses to appear before the
lawmakers and give account of their stewardship. The Chairmen regarded the
instruction as usurpation of the functions of the parliamentarians at the local
government level.
Councillors who also
believed their statutory roles were being taken over by the lawmakers,
protested against the decision and warned the assemblymen against usurping
their roles. But the lawmakers has directed that local government chairmen who
have not appeared before the state parliamentarians should stop such
appearances.
Prince Yemi
Aderibigbe, the publicity secretary of the Association of Local Governments of
Nigeria (ALGON) Oyo state chapter, who is also the Chairman of Akinyele Local
Government told Daily Independent that the
House’s action was a vendetta against some chairmen.
In a release titled
“ALGON boycotts OYHA hearing” Aderibigbe said ALGON has directed
its members not to honour the invitation.
“The state House
has turned the subject into vendetta, intimidation, vengeance, high handedness
and undemocratic attitude” he said.
He insisted that the
exercise ought to have been carried out by the legislative arm of the
respective local government councils in a democratic way.
“ALGON will not
condone any activity which is inimical to the upliftment of the entire 33 local
governments from any quarters unnecessarily” he said.
Aderibigbe said
ALGON’s decision was taken at the joint Assembly of ALGON a sequel to the
directive by the councilors of local governments in the state that all local
government chairmen should not appear before the house anymore.
