Last Updated: Friday, December 17th, 2004 HOME | Previous Page The GSM price war   Permit me a space in your widely read newspaper to comment on the on-going price war in the GSM industry and to commend Globacom for the current reduction in the prices of SIM cards of the various GSM companies in the country. One is happy to note that with just a little above N800, one can buy  a GSM line in the country today, a product that had once sold for as high as N30,000 in the same country. I want to appeal to the company to set the pace by reducing further its local tariff the way it recently reduced its international call rates. I have no doubt that other GSM companies will follow since they always waited for Globacom to act first.In most of the industrialised countries of the world these things that we associated with as luxuries are mere necessities. This is the reason why they are hardly expensive. the people who came here to ply their GSM trade merely cashed in on the fact that we seemed to have associated too much relevance with the ownership of a mobile phone, hence they were able to exploit our ego and smiled to the banks.
