Peace must reign in Anambra State

I was appalled to read about the mayhem unleashed on the Anambra State Government property by the agents of destruction. According to the disturbing paper report widely written in all the newspapers, the television station, the radio station and government house at Awka were set ablaze by yet to be identified hoodlums. This dastardly act has been affirmed as politically motivated geared towards causing chaos and confusion and thus portraying the State as ungovernable for  emergency rule to be declared. Another plausible reason for the unholy act is the need to preclude the forth-coming local government election from holding in the month of December, 2004.

This is a sad development that needs to be condemned by everyone who loves peace. Anambra State has really suffered so much in the hands of those who hate good and meaningful development to take place.

The detractors never want peace to reign in the State or even allow the Governor to continue his good work. But how long will this sordid act continue to haunt the good people of the State? Does it mean that some people are above the law? That these unscrupulous people continue to hold Anambra State to ransom is worrisome and  deleterious.

I call on the Federal government to take a close look of the unsavoury development with a view to fishing out those responsible for the violence and punish them accordingly to serve as a deterrent to others. Anambra State people are peace-loving people. They are very industrious, enterprising and hard working people who abhor violence in all its ramifications. The State needs to be protected from rascals who want to enrich themselves at the expense of the people of the State.
