Obasanjo, IG, military chiefs review security policy
From Madu Onuorah, Abuja

THE Presidential Villa, Abuja yesterday played host to the nation's military and security chiefs as President Olusegun Obasanjo held a retreat aimed at improving the formulation and implementation of a national security policy for the country.

The retreat, which lasted over six hours, reviewed the existing security strategies, resolving to ensure that they are in tune with on-going government's reforms.

Present at the meeting were Minister of Defence, Mr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Rowland Orisejafor, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Alexander Ogumudia, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Martin Luther Agwai, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Samuel Afolayan, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Jonah Wuyep, Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun and other stakeholders in the sector.

Oritsejafor told journalists after the meeting that the retreat examined all issues of national security.

He said: "We looked at where we are coming from and what we should be doing, particularly now that we have a democratic process. We have reforms going on now, so naturally the security sector ought to be part of the reforms. Security sector reforms are part of the democratisation process.

"And taken into consideration our added responsibility in terms of leadership, we are playing as a leader in Africa and globally, we looked at how to source for funds to meet up with our added responsibility, more so that every sector is yearning for funds. The retreat was very successful and I can assure you that we have a capable military leadership."
