Yes No Indifferent View results Deregulation, Privatisation Injurious, Says Confab From Mustapha Muhammad in Maiduguri, 12.17.2004 borno The National Delegates Conference (NDC) of Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, has considered the neo-liberal policies and values behind deregulation, privatisation and downsizing as injurious to the well-being of the country. This was part of the resolution of the 7th quandrennial national delegates conference, held in Maiduguri contained in a communique signed by the National President Comrade Ayuba P. Wabba. It further said that the policies and values are incapable to engendering the positive transformationof the counry rather is to further impoverish and pauperise Nigerians through ever-increasing petroleum products prices, soaring costs and plummeting standards of living. The NDC in session clamoured for socio-economic system that would assure the working people of a better today and guaranteed future, adding that such system could emerge only with the working class involvement in its formulation and development. However, it condemned categorically of what it called "the anti-working people spirit behind the draconian and retrogressive executive bill for the amendment of the Trade Union Bill." The conference enjoined the National Assembly to put aside its deliberations on the bill and wait for the views of the tripartite National Labour Advisory Council inthe spirit of democratic social partnership and for a comprehensive review of Nigeria's labour laws. It also reaffirmed the union's indepth commitment to education, having considered educationand training as very critical for trade union development as well as quest for gender equity and its necessary unequivocal positionin the fight against HIV, AIDS.
