National Security:  Obasanjo meets security chiefs

PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday met with all security chiefs in a defence retreat with a view to improving on the National Security Policy for the country.

The meeting which lasted eight hours, was attended by Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun and all the stakeholders in the security sector, emphasising on collective responsibility involving all arms of the military.

Also at the meeting presided over by President Olusegun Obasanjo, existing security strategies were discussed and reviewed and a resolution to ensure that the strategies are in line with the present government�s reform measures.

Speaking to State House correspondents, shortly after the meeting, the minister of state (Defence), Rolan Ovitse-Jafar explained that the meeting discussed and examined all issues pertaining to national security.

In his words: �We looked at what we were coming for and what we should be doing, particularly now that we have a democratic set-up. We have reforms going on now, so naturally, the security sector ought to be part of the reforms�, he explained, adding: �Security sector reforms are part of the democratisation process. And taking into consideration our added responsibility, more so that every sector is yearning for funds. The retreat was very successful and I can assure you that we have a capable military leadership�.
