FROM January to December 2004 about 39 armed robbers were
killed while exchanging fire with men of the Kano state Police Command, with
another 142 arrested.
Similarly, three policemen of the command gallantly lost
their lives during the same period.
This was disclosed to members of the press at a special
briefing by the Kano state Police Commissioner, Alhaji G. A. Dawodu on
Tuesday at the command�s headquarters.
He further explained that arms and ammunitions recovered
during the period under review include 142 guns of different brands, a
bullet-proof vest and over 2,889, several calibre of ammunitions.
Alhaji Dawodu said other dangerous items recovered are
204 cutlasses, seven axes, four daggers, 63 swords, 92 clubs and nine other
local weapons.
�The command had also succeeded in recovering a total
number of 56 motor vehicles, 265 motor cycles and four bicycles from the
hoodlums�, the compol declared.
Alhaji A. Dawodu who explained that after incessant raids
on various criminal dens at Sabon Gari, Zoo road, Triumph junction, IBB way,
Dala and Jakara areas all in Kano, the command had arrested and prosecuted
148 others believed to be members of the notorious �Yandaba groups.
At Bebeji town, according to the compol, the command on
September 29, 2004 recovered a truck containing 35,214 litres of kerosene
siphoned from NNPC pipes by vandals.
With pride, the compol revealed, �the command, from
January to date hasn�t recorded a single incident of bank robbery, adding:
�The Police Area Commands and Divisional Police Offices in the state have
been directed to beef up security at banks in their areas from now to
December ending in order to have a complete success security wise�.
On job opportunities to Kano state indigenes, the compol said the command
has recruited 637 school certificate holders as constables, issued 1,000
Cadet ASPs and Inspectors admission form and 50 Cadet Inspectors to Zone I,
Headquarters, Kano.
