Independent judiciary food for democracy --Yaradua

From MUAWUYA B. IDRIS, Katsina

KATSINA state governor, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yaradua has observed that only free and independent judiciary will guarantee survival of democracy in Nigeria.

Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for a befitting High Court of Justice building in Katsina, Governor Yaradua explained that it is only when the judiciary is independent that it would discharge its duty effectively.

Governor Yaradua explained further that absence of free and independent judiciary will only create chaos, instability and injustice.

He said his administration attaches great importance to ensuring free and independent judiciary in the state.

One of the legacies which I hope to leave by 2007 is to ensure our judiciary is financially independent to enable it carry out its function effectively, he added.

Governor Yaradua explained that his administration has assisted the judiciary in the area of employment matters as provided in the budget.

The governor commended the contractor handling the construction of the new High Court Complex, for quality job so far.

Earlier, the state Chief Judge, Justice Abdullahi Mahuta had explained that the judiciary has made its presence across the state by establishing 93 Sharia Courts, 15 Magistrate courts, five judicial divisions of the state High Court and four divisions of the Sharia Court of Appeal.

Justice Mahuta described the foundation laying of the complex as a landmark in the history of the state.

He stressed the need for a befitting accommodation for the Sharia Court of Appeal.
