Cultists Attack Odilis Convoy
Police arrest 17 From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt, 12.20.2004
A group of youths suspected to be cultists weekend attacked the convoy of Rivers State Governor, Dr. Peter Odili, who was returning from official engagement within the state. The state police commissioner, Mr. Sylvester Araba who confirmed the attack on the governor disclosed that 15 persons have been arrested. The attack on Odili was said to have occurred between the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) and Rumuokoro junction along the East West road in Port Harcourt, the state capital. In a statement to newsmen, the governors spokesman, Mr. Emma Okah, stated that the incident occured when Odili was returning from the burial ceremony of the mother of one Chief Omobo Clinton Harry, a relation to the late Chief Marshall Harry at Obuama in Degama local government area of the state. Okah explained that a Toyota Hiace bus with plate number Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), No. BK1 broke into the state governors convoy and repeatedly attempted to run into the governors official car. The driver of the bus, Mr. Ibrahim Amachree who was conveying 15 youths suspected to be cultists, ignored the... governors convoy, and all warnings from the security operatives attached to the governor and continuously forced his way in the direction of the car carrying the state governor, Dr. Peter Odili, Okah explained in the statement. According to him, when the struggle between the cult group to gain access to the governors vehicle persisted, the security men could not fathom the intentions and the strange behavior of the driver, Ibrahim Promise Amachree and had to shoot one of the tyres of the bus before it could give way." Okah disclosed that the governors security vehicle suffered extensive damage as a result of the struggle to prevent the cultists' vehicle from running into Odilis car. The matter, he stated, has been reported to the police. The state commissioner of police yesterday said 15 persons have been arrsted in connection with the incident while the vehicle used to commit the alleged crime haes been impounded. Araba maintained that police have commenced immediate investigations into the matter to ascertain those behind it and their motives. Port Harcourt a few months ago witnessed several violent exchanges between rival cult groups who also wreak havoc on residents of the oil-producing city. The campaign against cultism and the different negotiations between the federal and state government on one hand and the cultists on the other in which the latter were encouraged to return guns for some monetary compensations created some respite in the state.
