UMUAHIA — FORMER Speaker of House of Representatives, Alhaji Umar Ghali N’Abba said yesterday in Umuahia that Igbo have a bright chance to produce the country’s president in 2007 through Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, who has already declared interest in the race.
Speaking with journalists after a meeting with the Abia State Governor, N'Abba dismissed insinuation in some quarters that Kalu does not possess the necessary experience required to govern Nigeria, saying that the governor is a very good man and a detribalised Nigerian who can meet the aspirations of the people. He said that the issue of he and Kalu running on the same ticket was not discussed at the meeting, adding however that “Orji Kalu is a very close friend of mine and I am ready to support him at all times.”
His words: "Orji is over 40 years old and General Yakubu Gowon was Head of State at the age of 32 while General Murtala Muhammed governed the country at the age of 34 years. Also General Obasanjo was once Head of State at the age of 35 or 36 and I don’t see why Orji Kalu would be said not to be mature enough to handle Nigeria.”
N’Abba frowned at the habit of zoning the presidency to any particular section of the country at any time stating, “I am not saying that it is the turn of Ndigbo, but I am saying that it is the right of every Nigerian to aspire to be president. But the problem of zoning the office of president has to be addressed and I believe that all these things have to do with the way and manner we administer the people of Nigeria.”
According to him, the country’s past leaders had not given justice to all Nigerians and that is why people feel that it is only when the president comes from their own area that they can enjoy the good things of life.
Although the former speaker admitted that there are certain anomalies in the current structure of the country, he observed that they are not the kind of problems that require convening a national conference to set things right. “What Nigeria needs is a just leader and a general leadership that can give Nigerians the good things of life,” he stated.
