Is President Olusegun Obasanjo's proposed National Dialogue the way forward for Nigeria?
IYC Boss Denies Attack on Ibori
From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt, 12.22.2004
National President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Comrade Oyeinfie Emmanuel Jonjon, has faulted the claim that members of the council attempted to attack the Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili last Saturday in Port Harcourt. Debunking the claim while fielding questions from newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, Jonjon said such could not have occurred when all hands are now on deck for restoration of peace in the state. He said although the people involved were actually Ijaw sons and members of the IYC, they were not on any sinister motive of attacking or assassinating the governor as security operatives alleged. The young men, are Ijaw people. They were on their way to Port Harcourt that fateful day when tc Odilis onvoy overtook the bus that convey the boys. When the convoy overtook the bus, which was equally on a high speed, it is not easy for you to clear suddenly but to look for convenient place to park or clear. But when the security boys observed that the bus was loaded with 15 young men, one overzealous security man decided to shoot the tyre, he said. He said the vehicle in question is one of NDDC mass transit buses that was given to the national secretariat of the IYC , but presently under custody of former President of INC, Alhaji Asari Dokubo. It is very untrue that who is now working with government to bring peace to the state, could turn his boys against the governor. I want to say here that the boys did not attack the governors convoy, rather, it was the security attached to the governor that attacked the boys. The boys were not armed with any dangerous weapon. We are not comfortable with the way the system is trying to blackmail the IYC.
