Obasanjo agreed to return Enugu, Anambra to APGA, Okorie alleges

By Chukwudi Achife,

Bureau Chief, Enugu

Embatled National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chekwas Okorie, has alleged that President Olusegun Obasanjo once agreed to return two of the four states where APGA had claimed victory in the 2003 gubernatorial elections to the party as part of a deal to win his (Okorie’s) support for the administration.

He insisted that the current crisis in the party was sponsored by the Presidency following the party’s decision to zone its presidential ticket in 2007 to the South East geo-political zone.

Okorie who  spoke with reporters in Enugu, also faulted the verdict of the Court of Appeal in the suit filed by the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) presidential candidate, Major General Muhammadu Buhari against the election of President Olusegun Obasanjo describing it as a “political judgment”.

He said the President had called him shortly after the elections and offered him financial  benefits and positions in the administration to secure his solidarity with the government but said he rebuffed the advances and demanded that the four states of Enugu, Anambra, Imo and Abia be returned to APGA before he enters into any alliance with the government.

According to him, the President had later accepted to give up Enugu and Anambra states to APGA and even directed the State Security Services to interview APGA gubernatorial candidates in the two states, Ugochukwu Agballah and Peter Obi adding that he personally took the duo to Abuja for the interview.
