Navy warship explodes

By Emma Nnadozie
Thursday, December 23, 2004

LAGOS—A NIGERIAN Navy warship exploded yesterday at Apapa, injuring scores of officers and men. A Naval officer working on the engine of the ship was missing at press time.

The warship identified as NNS Enyimiri was said to be undergoing local maintenance at the NNS Beecroft jetty in Apapa, Lagos when the explosion took place around mid day. Vanguard learnt that the engine of the MK 9 Corvette was being worked on when it unexpectedly exploded and then went up in flames sending officers and men scampering for safety.

The accident was described as “unprecedented" in the history of the Nigerian Navy. Scores of Naval officers in Lagos and Abuja rushed to the Navy Hospital at Navy Town in Ojo where all injured officers and men are receiving treatment.

Some Naval personnel who spoke on condition of anonymity told Vanguard that the casualty figure could be higher as they claimed many of the injured suffered first and second degree burns and doctors were battling to save their lives.

The exploded vessel is one of the 17 vessels undergoing maintenance in the country after successful operations of the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

At 5.30pm yesterday, Naval ambulances were seen conveying some of the injured to the Naval Hospital, Ojo through Kirikiri Town. The convoy of a the top Naval chief was also seen racing with siren towards Navy Town through the same route. It was not, however, possible to contact any Naval spokesman at press time, but a source said they would certainly come out with a statement today.
