Is President Olusegun Obasanjo's proposed National Dialogue the way forward for Nigeria?
Allow Democracy to Grow, Says Army Chief
From George Oji in Abuja, 12.23.2004
Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Mathin Luther Agwai, has urged all military personnel to collectively support the present democratic dispensation to flourish since it has been universally acclaimed that democracy is the best form of government. The Army Chief said such support should not only be limited to the executive arm of government, but should also be extended to the legislature and the judiciary. Speaking during the decoration ceremony for the newly promoted 14 army generals at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja yesterday, Agwai noted that military loyalty to civilian democracy has become imperative in view of the fact that the military is better off under democratic dispensation. Those promoted from the rank of Brigadier General to Major General included S. Guar, F. Atambi, N. N. Maza, L. K. F. Aprezi, Otubu, Ihekere, Dzarma, Jokotola, K.E. Ekwo, J. B. Ahamadu, S. M. Lemu and S.A. Abdulrahaman. Those who were lifted from Colonel to the rank of Brigadier General are P.O. Reis and S.I. Wali. Agwai said at the event that experience had also shown that the military can only grow and flourish if democracy takes root in the country. "We are going through transition. We are transforming ourselves. What we need is total commitment to our duty. We must give the Federal Government and the legislative arm of government the full support they required. "We must do everything possible to allow democracy to grow strong in this country, and I believe you can only have strong democracy if you have strong military, and strong military means strong National Assembly. "We must live above board. We must forget any distractions that could take us away from our primary role. We must remain committed to the role we have sworn and committed to perform. I am confident that the present leadership we have in the Nigeria Army will be able to transform the army so that we can be a force to be reckoned with not only in Africa but in the world." Agwai said. While congratulating the new generals, Agwai observed that the standard, exposure and experiences in the army were improving every day. He said the promotion could not go round those who qualify for it because of the limited vacancies in the service, adding that the bulk of those promoted were from the 14 Regular Course.
