Police, SSS deny plot for fresh mayhem in Kano
From Adamu Abuh,
Kano

THE Kano Police Command and the State Security Services (SSS) yesterday faulted the state government, which claimed that there was a plot by some people to cause mayhem in the Kano metropolis.

The Kano Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Ganiyu Dawodu, who spoke to journalists yesterday at the Bompai headquarters of the command, said there was no substance in the alarm raised by the state government.

Flanked by the Kano State director of SSS, Alhaji Sadiq Abubakar Dalhat, the police boss noted: "The situation painted by the Kano Information Commissioner is not true. There is no threat to security of lives and property as far as I or all the security agencies are concerned."
Ganiyu, who was apparently displeased with the alarm raised by the state government, reiterated the command's resolve to protect lives and property in the state.

He added: "We are not relenting in our efforts to protect the lives and property of the people. We are capable of nipping in the bud any plot to create chaos in the state."
Enjoining residents of Kano to continue their normal business activities, he said security personnel would continue to patrol strategic locations of the metropolis to ensure a hitch-free Yuletide.

The presence of security personnel including soldiers in parts of the metropolis on Tuesday heightened fears that rumours of the planned attack, which had been circulating among Christians resident in the metropolis, might be true.

The rumours of the plot were confirmed by the state's Information Commissioner, Alhaji Garba Yusuf Abubakar, on Tuesday at a press conference where he disclosed that miscreants had been sponsored to burn down mosques and churches during this year's Yuletide.

According to the commissioner, the plot is masterminded by detractors of Governor Ibrahim Shekarau and it is aimed at pitting Christians and Moslems against one another in the metropolis.

Stating that the mayhem that could follow the fighting between Moslems and Christians is aimed at preparing the ground for a declaration of a state of emergency, added that the sponsorship of dozens of the miscreants to Saudi Arabia to disrupt the activities of Kano's contingent to next year's hajj was part of the plot.
