Nigeria crime-free in 2005 -IGP assures

By ADAMU ABDULLAHI

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Tafa Balogun has assured Nigerians that the year 2005 will be crime-free in the country.

Alhaji Balogun gave the assurance when he paid a courtesy call on the Kano state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau yesterday.

The IGP maintained that security is everybodys business, saying that the support being rendered to the police by the Kano state government is a clear manifestation of the governments commitment to the security of lives and properties.

No matter what police have, they wont produce good result if they do not have equipment and enabling environment, the IG expressed.

Alhaji Balogun stated that the police institution will continue to give much needed support to the sustenance of democracy and protection of all and sundry.

He said Kanos assistance is very spectacular for it has surpassed the contributions of other states, adding: I am proud of Kano as it is a stepping stone to my present position.

Responding, Governor Ibrahim Shekarau expressed appreciation for the support and cooperation of the state police command in making the state a peaceful place to live.

Malam Shekarau pointed out that any development brought to the people could only be beneficial when there is adequate security of life and property.

He disclosed that his administration considers assisting federal agencies in the state on the ground that all their services are directly for the general well being of its people.

Governor Shekarau therefore requested the federal government to post more police personnel to the state because of the strategic importance of the state in the country.
