Navy probes warship explosion By Ruby Rabiu The Nigerian Navy yesterday declared that an investigation panel has been set up to dete-rmine the cause of explosion of a Naval Warship “NNS Enyimiri” at Apapa, injuring scores of officers and men. One person was confirmed killed in the incident. A statement signed by the Naval spokesman, Navy Captain Sinedi Hungiapuko, confirmed that a fire incident occurred on board the wor-ship in the engine room while the ship was undergoing local repairs at the NNS BEECROFT Jetty, Apapa, Lagos. The naval spokesman said “an officer, some ratings and civilian staff who were in the engine room sustained injuries. It is regrettable that the officer later died following the injuries he sustained. However, the rema-ining ratings and civilian staff were treated at the Naval Hospital, Ojo and were discharged accordingly.” Hunglapuko refuted reports that alot of Naval officers and rating died and some were seriously injured. A Nigerian Navy warship had exploded on Wellesley at Apapa were scores of officers and men of the Navy were alleged to have been injured. The warship was undergoing local maintenance when it exploded around mid day. Sources told Daily Trust that the engine of the MK 9 corvette which was being worked unexpectedly exploded and the Naval officers on board scampered around for safety. The exploded vessel is one of the 17 vessels undergoing maintenance in the country after a successful ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) operation in Liberia and Sierra Leone.     TO NEXT NEWS PAGE ...
