From Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi, 12.28.2004
Plateau State governor Joshua Dariye yesterday led a delegation consisting top officials of his administration to Bauchi State where he called on his counterpart, Ahmadu Adamu Mu'azu to declare his candidacy for the 2007 presidential election next year. Dariye who spoke at Government House, Bauchi when he led a delegation comprising of members of the Plateau State Executive Council, House of Assembly and top members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on a thank you visit pointed out that "Governor Mu'azu is a young dynamic brother who has performed favourably well." While describing Mu'azu as a politician who has touched the lives of his people, he said his administration "will apply some of the methods employed by Governor Mu'azu in moving Bauchi State forward." He said he looked forward to when Mu'azu will launch his presidential campaign in 2005 and that Plateau State being part of the immediate constituency of the Bauchi governor will be consulted for the successful accomplishment of such an endeavour. He added Mu'azu would only need to tell him and he would get members of the Plateau administration to set to work. Dariye also expressed the intention of his administration to participate in joint ventures with the Bauchi State government to move the two states forward, and assured of the collaboration of his government and people with Bauchi State government in the task of state building as partners in development process. "I know that governance in this millennium is difficult, while you are trying on one hand, saboteurs are trying on the other hand, but the Almighty God who is supreme, who did not make mistake in making you Governor of Bauchi State will call you to serve and deliver the goods as President. "I am looking forward with delight when you will launch your presidential campaign come 2005, and I believe that Plateau is your immediate constituency, you'll come and consult us before you launch it, that is why we have cream of politicians here, members of the assembly, and even if you cannot come just give us kayan aiki (working materials) and you are on course," Dariye said. In his response, Mu'azu pointed out that the business of choosing a leadership for the country belonged to "almighty God who has already designed such leadership for the country as he deems fit." He disclosed that various interest groups have been prodding him to declare his intention for the Presidency but he never said anything to anybody in this direction. According to him, "I will not give pleasure to those who want to hear my opinion or response on this issue since such choice is in the hands of Almighty God." He however prayed that "Nigeria will be blessed with a president that has the capacity to continue to build on the work of our past heroes will build a stronger, more united, prosperous, single entity for Nigerians to enjoy." Mu'azu also prayed Almighty God, to make "the country to take its rightful position in Africa and among the comity of nations of the world." On the internally displaced citizens of Plateau State that are being catered for in Bauchi, the governor said over 50,000 of the refugees were hosted while over N320 million were expended to attend to their needs. He added that about 50 per cent of the displaced persons had since returned to Plateau. He then called on all political leaders and elected representatives to always be fair to all and engage in the task of providing equitable development to all parts irrespective of any inclination with the limited resources available. He added that this was the only way for peaceful and harmonious co-existence among the citizenry.
