JAMES, Warri
CROATIAN hostage,
Ivan Roso, who was kidnapped by suspected Ijaw youths in Bayelsa State on
Christmas Day, breathed the sweet air of freedom Monday night after Gov.
Diepreye Alamieyeseigha secured his release.
Another report said the unidentified
chairman of Ekeremor local government area in Bayelsa handed over Roso to the
governor, after he (chairman) had negotiated with the youths.
Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the
governor, Mr. Zee Debekeme told Daily Champion that Gov. Alamieyeseigha
is to address a press conference on the matter today.
Police sources claimed that Gov.
Alamieyeseigha, who yesterday afternoon led a team to negotiate with the irate
youths, stormed Iduwini, the stronghold of the captors, in the night and
negotiated Roso’s release.
In Warri, which shares the same waters
with Ekeremor council area, Commanding Officer (CO) of the naval base, NNS
Delta, Capt. Jacob Ajani told newsmen that Roso would soon be released to
his employees by officials of the Bayelsa State Government.
Fifteen Nigerian workers, who were with
Roso had reportedly earlier been released by the youths.
It would be recalled that Roso and his
colleagues all workers in an oil services firm Seabulk, were aboard a crew boat
heading for a Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) oil field, named EA in
the deep offshore area of the nation’s coastal waters, when they were kidnapped
by the daring youths.
Reiterating the commitment of the Navy to
make the nation’s waterways crime-free and safe from the activities of pirates
Capt. Ajani asked the manager of oil companies and their services firms to
request from the base naval escort to safe guard their operations.
He lamented that the companies had
allegedly continued to ignore his well meaning advice to seek protection from
his command before deploying men and equipment to the water ways.
