Embattled Governor of Anambra State, Dr Chris Ngige, on wednesday re-emerged from his hide-out, alleging that a plot had been hatched by Chief Chris Uba and his group to forcefully remove him from office today and replace him with his impeached deputy, Dr Okey Udeh. Also, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Mike Balonwu, said he would not take over from Ngige because the order of the court to that effect was "unconstitutional." But the police also said they can't restore the governor's withdrawn security aides until its top echelon have fully studied the orders given by an Awka High Court to that effect. However, the applicant in the controversial High Court ruling in which the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tafa Balogun, was ordered to remove Ngige from office had initiated contempt proceedings against the governor, the IGP and Anambra State Attorney-General, Chief Nnoruka Udechukwu. Ngige who spoke in a hurriedly arranged African Independent Television (AIT) live programme at the Government House, Awka alleged that about 500 policemen had been mobilised from Anambra's neighbouring states and massed in a place he did not mention to effect his removal. He, however, emphasised that he had no personal problem with President Olusegun Obasanjo. (This Day) |
