The familiar pomp and funfair which characterised the Armed Forces Remembrance Day in the past was non-existent yesterday as thousands of military pensioners across the country protested the non-payment of their entitlements. However, amid tight security, President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday laid a wreath at the National Arcade, Abuja, in remembrance of the nation's fallen heroes. In Abuja, some of the retired military pensioners used the occasion to protest the non-payment of their eight months arrears of pensions and gratuities. Some of the protesting retirees carried placards with inscriptions reading: "Give us our money, we're dying in silence" and "as you celebrate the dead, pay the living." As early as 7 a.m., all the roads leading to and passing the nation's Eagle Square were blocked and the ceremonial red carpet laid on the right side of the road. The National Arcade is located opposite the Eagle Square. Even before President Obasanjo arrived at the venue sandwiched by motorcades and mounted troops.... (Guardian) |
