Moves by the Federal Government to abort the proposed strike action by the BiafraNigeria Labour Congress (NLC) billed for Wednesday, January 21, to protest the N1.50 per litre fuel tax, were frustrated yesterday following a ruling of an Abuja High Court which turned down government request to stop the action. The ruling thus clears the way for labour to go ahead with the action which NLC president Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has described as "the last strike." The judgement was delivered a few hours after eleven political parties filed a suit against the President and the National Assembly over the imposition of fuel tax. Mr. Justice Lawal Gunmi, the presiding judge and the Chief Judge of Abuja High Court, while dismissing Federal Government's motion seeking an order of interlocutory injunction against the strike, said the applicant (Federal Government) did not place any material evidence before him to make him grant the reliefs it sought from the court. Moreover, the trial judge said he was yet to come across any law in the country that prevents workers from protesting against policies that impinge on their interest. (This Day) |
