US Grants Nigeria N61.1bn for Devt Programmes From Cletus Akwaya and Iyefu Adoba in Abuja The United States and Nigeria yesterday signed four agreements for the provision of $460 million (about N61.1 billion) in grants to Nigeria for development programmes in the areas of electoral system, good governance, health, education, science and technology among others. Also, US foreign direct investment, (FDI), to Nigeria has hit $7 billion even as Nigeria has been ranked as America's most important trading partner in Africa. US Ambassador to Nigeria, John F. Campbell accompanied by Dawn Liberi, Mission Director of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) signed on behalf of the US government in his first official engagement since his arrival in the country a few days ago, while Professor Ode Ojowu, Economic Adviser to the President and Chairman, National Planning Commission (NPC) signed on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria. The aid package encapsulated in four strategic objective grants agreements' and channeled through USAID is for a plan period of five years (2004-2009). Yesterday's strategic plan is the first such plan to be proposed by USAID for Nigeria in over 20 years and adds to a number of other initiatives being supported by USAID including funding of telecommunications expansion to rural areas through the National Communications Commission (NCC) and housing for the rural poor through some mortgage banks yet to fully take off.
