Ajaokuta: Monitoring Committee Flays Work Pace From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja Suitability of Solgas, an American energy firm to turn around Ajaokuta Steel Complex yesterday became doubtful as the Presidential Monitoring Committee on the project expressed displeasure over the pace of work at the complex. Briefing newsmen at the National Assembly shortly after a meeting with the House Committee on Steel, Chairman of the monitoring Committee, Phillip Umunnakwe said they were not satisfied with the pace of work on the complex by Solgas. On whether they have been able to ascertain if the company has the financial back bone to shoulder the project estimated at $3 billion whereas the company has a turn over of N600 million per annum, the chairman replied that they were expecting an audit of the activities of Solgas since they took over. It was from the report that he said the Committee would be able to reach final conclusion on the issue, admitting however, that they have already fallen behind schedule in the projections for the kick starting of the plant. Asked if it was true that some parts were being frittered away from the company and sold, he said his committee investigated the report and discovered that there was an attempt, which was foiled when some people got an illegal authority from unauthorized quarters to move some parts out of the complex, which was however discovered and stopped.
