Customs Impounds 305 Containers of Scrap Metals, Wood By Francis Ugwoke Consignments of scrap metals and wood in 305 containers meant to be smuggled out of the country by their owners have been impounded by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos. The owners of the containers attempted to export them about two weeks ago before they were caught by the Customs at Tin Can Island port. It was gathered that the containers were brought into the seaport by the exporters as empty containers ready to be loaded into ships before the Customs, acting on a tip-off, ordered a thorough inspection which led to the discovery of the cargoes. Our source disclosed that inspection of empty containers loaded in the terminals has been on for the past two weeks. During the first week, our source said that about 80 containers were found, while last week, a more shocking consignment of 225 containers were discovered stacked among empty containers. THISDAY gathered that following the discovery, all officers in the export seat of the Customs at Tin Can port were invited to Abuja for interrogation. About nine of the 25 officers who were invited, have been allowed to return to their Lagos base while the remaining are still being interrogated at Abuja. The belief of the Customs management is that a good number of the officers in the export seat cannot deny knowledge of the plan by the exporters to smuggle the consignments which exportation is prohibited by the Federal Government. The Customs Public Relations Officer, Mr. Wale Adeniyi who confirmed the story however said he was not aware of the number of containers so far discovered.
