Ijaw Leaders Denounce Peace Deal From Onwuka Nzeshi in Warri Two Ijaw leaders have denounced the peace deal signed with leaders of the Itsekiri group on the cessation of hostilities in Warri. Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, a former Federal Commissioner (Minister) of Information during the Gen. Yakubu Gowon regime as Head of State, said the peace accord cannot hold water because its terms did not take into cognisance the real issues behind the long drawn conflict. Clark, a frontline Ijaw opinion leader and a key actor in the seven-year-old conflict picked holes in the accord disclosing that the salient issues responsible for the fratricidal wars such as proper delineation of electoral wards; creation of separate local government for the ethnic groups as well as equal access by the groups to socio-economic and political opportunities were not addressed. Also commenting on the peace deal struck only last week, another Ijaw leader, Chief Samson Mamamu described the accord as a deceptive exercise spearheaded by political apologists of the ruling Peoples Democratic party in Delta State in their attempt to undermine the genuine struggle by the Ijaw ethnic group or political autonomy in the Warri area. Mamamu who is Chairman of Ijaw National Congress, Western Zone, said a genuine peace deal between the Ijaws and the Itsekiris ought to have addressed the fundamental issues of lopsided electoral wards and the age-long outcry of marginalisation of the Ijaws in Warri. Although both leaders spoke at separate fora, their views may signal the beginning of yet another round of verbal war between the ethnic groups, a situation the state government which midwifed the current peace deal may find very embarrassing.
